Why TurnCards
Every other flashcard app makes you type or tap. TurnCards makes you speak — the way language actually works.

How it works
TurnCards vs. typing-based apps
TurnCards tests the skill you're actually trying to build: understanding a spoken word and saying the answer back.
| Feature | TurnCards | Typical flashcard apps |
|---|---|---|
| How you answer | ✓Speak it out loud, graded by voice | ✕Type or tap to reveal |
| Pronunciation | ✓Every card spoken aloud with native TTS | ✕Usually silent, text only |
| Grading | ✓Lenient — accepts synonyms, close spellings, alternate phrasings | ✕Often exact-match or self-graded |
| Privacy | ✓On your device, backed up to your iCloud — never our servers | ✕Often requires an account and syncs to a company's servers |
| Content | ✓Built-in decks graded by CEFR level (A1–C2) | ✕Bring-your-own, rarely leveled |
| When you can't speak out loud | ✓Switch to Multiple Choice, Match Game, or Listen-Only — same cards, no mic needed | ✕Usually limited to self-grade or type-the-answer |
| Cost | ✓Free, no subscription. Small banner ads shown outside study sessions — never mid-card. | ✕Often freemium with paid tiers or subscriptions |
Languages
TurnCards works with any language your iPhone supports — not just the ones listed below. The Deck Library has ready-made packs for these languages, and you can import or build decks in anything else. TTS pronunciation and voice grading follow whatever language you assign to a deck.
Don't see your language? If iOS has a text-to-speech voice for it, TurnCards supports it. Build your own deck →
